BOSTON UNIVERSITY
YOUTH & FAMILIES CENTER
380 Shawmut Avenue
Boston, MA
Architect: Beacon Architectural Associates
Completion: January 2013

This was a collaborative effort between Boston University and the City of Boston to create a place for inner city kids to go. Blackstone Elementary School located at 380 Shawmut Avenue in Boston had three thousand unusable SF of space on the fourth floor. The space had deteriorated from it’s many years of abuse and had sat idle for the last seven years.

With financing from Boston University and The City of Boston, architectural drawings from Beacon Architectural Associates and construction by Lake Contracting, the space was turned into a “state-of-the-art” recreational/gymnasium for use by the inner city youth and families. Upon completion, both Boston University and the City of Boston hosted an opening ceremony, attended by many, and concluded with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Menino. The BU Youth and Families Center has proven to be a huge success!
